When You Arrive

Getting to Campus

Your acceptance materials will indicate when to arrive for the beginning of classes and when you may move into residence halls. It is important not to arrive earlier than the indicated dates, since accommodations will not be available.

When your plane lands and you are cleared through customs, you may call 1.800.AIRRIDE, which will give you information about transportation options from different airports to campus. Courtesy booths in the airports allow you to call for limousines and ride-sharing services.

If you are arriving at JFK International Airport, you can contact the YMCA International Student Service beforehand. It provides an airport arrival/reception program that helps with customs, immigration procedures, and temporary accommodations. The services are free, but you must make an appointment in advance by calling 212.727.8800 or mailing a letter to 7 W. 23rd St., New York, NY 10010.

You may also contact the U.S. embassy in your home country for assistance as you plan your arrival in the U.S.

International students are required to check in with the Office of International Education prior to registering for classes. You must bring your I-20, passport, visa, and I-94 card.

Orientation

Just prior to the start of classes, you will attend an international student orientation session at the campus where you will attend classes. At this informal session, you will meet other international students and learn how to obtain a Social Security number, open a bank account, get your international driver's license, obtain the immunizations you may still need, and maintain your F-1 status. The date of this orientation will be mailed to you before you leave for the United States. If you have any specific questions, contact the director of international education by calling 516.686.7585 or e-mailing internationaleducation@nyit.edu.
