Dear Friends of NYIT Athletics,
The department of intercollegiate athletics and recreation continues its quest for excellence. In 2006, NYIT athletics remained in the national picture with a NCAA elite 8 appearance by the men's soccer program and the women's volleyball 5th straight appearance in the NCAA playoffs. As always our true strength is our academic prowess. I am extremely proud of the overall departmental GPA of 2.97 combined with 57 student-athletes being named to the East Coast conference All-Academic team.
Our physical infrastructure continues to improve. Last spring we completed work on a new softball field, new irrigation system and fence for the baseball field, and this fall we will completed work on a new synthetic turf surface for the lacrosse/soccer field. These quality improvements have already had a positive and profound impact on the quality of each respective program.
I am extremely excited about the upcoming year. Due to your support we have been able to develop a sound tradition of academic and athletic success. As we continue to strive for excellence your generosity continues to inspire everyone involved with the Bear athletic program. I look forward to interacting with you, discussing issues, planning for the future and witnessing the growth of our fine young men and women.
On behalf of our student-athletes, coaches and administration, thanks!
Back the Bears,

Clyde M. Doughty, Jr.
Director of Intercollegiate
Athletics and Recreation
About Our Director
Clyde Doughty Jr. has been at NYIT for 30 years, since the day he first attended a class at the Old Westbury Campus. A native of Hollis, Queens, Doughty attended Brooklyn Tech High School, where he played three seasons of varsity basketball.
He earned a scholarship to NYIT, and during his basketball career, the Bears made it to the NCAA Tournament twice, losing in the championship game to Virginia Union in 1979-80. After graduating, Doughty became the academic advisor to student athletes, and three years later, he became the assistant director of athletics. In 1988, he succeeded Dr. William T. Lai as director of athletics.
Doughty currently oversees intercollegiate, recreational and intramural athletic programs at the Old Westbury and Central Islip campuses. He counts among his achievements enhancing the athletic department’s organizational structure and stability, and improving the academic performances of NYIT’s student-athletes. During Doughty’s tenure, the Bears have made numerous appearances in NCAA and ECAC post-season play. The men’s lacrosse team has won the NCAA National championship three times, 1997, 2003 and 2005, the ECAC Championship in 2001 and appeared in the NCAA championship game on two other occasions, 1994 and 2002. The men’s basketball team captured the ECAC championship in 1995, while the men’s track and field placed third at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships in 1999, and second at the indoor championships in 2001.
Doughty, who earned a bachelor’s degree in business management, has two master’s degrees from NYIT: one in human resource management, and one in human relations. In January 2001, Doughty was named to a four-year term as a member of the NCAA Division II Management Council. The council implements policies adopted by the NCAA Executive Committee and the Presidents’ Council, interprets Division II bylaws, and recommends the adoption of amendments and regulations regarding Division II athletics.
Doughty resides in Wheatley Heights, N.Y., with his wife, Pamela, his mother, Ida, and three children: 26-year-old Brandon, 19-year-old Jessica, and 14-year-old Andre.
