On Sept. 6, NYIT kicked off the 2007-2008 academic year with its annual convocation, held for the first time in decades in New York City. Students, faculty, and staff members gathered to hear the presidential state-of-the-institution address, the presentation of the Presidential Excellence Awards for Faculty and Staff, and introductions of the newest members of the NYIT community. The event was also broadcast live for attendees in Old Westbury and Central Islip.
Edward Guiliano, Ph.D., president of NYIT, presented a recap of the past year’s accomplishments, as well as a preview of NYIT’s new Web site that is scheduled to launch this fall and an update on the college’s 2030 strategic plan.
“Our plans now are about quality, sustainability, and transforming NYIT into a new model university for the 21st century,” he told convocation attendees.
To mark these goals, President Guiliano officially announced the opening of NYIT’s first full campus in Nanjing, China, which will offer four undergraduate degree programs when its doors open in October. He also emphasized continued work on interdisciplinary efforts, incorporating best practices and mentorship to sustain a student-centered focus, and improved teaching through technology.
“We must remember that the mission of this institution is not simply teaching and applied research, but also giving our students every tool we have or can invent to enable them to learn better and more deeply,” said President Guiliano. |
